Good morning, Church Family and Friends,
Do you know why, sometimes, when you come to church, you’re uncomfortable? Do you know why you come two or three times and then decide you’re not going to come back? Or, why you come one Sunday and then take a month off? Or you drop in and hope the preacher is away? Or hope we’re talking about something irrelevant? It’s probably the same reason the Samaritan woman at the well (in Jesus’ famous story in John, chapter 4) wanted to change the subject. It’s because Jesus suddenly, abruptly, painfully puts her in touch with her thirst.
Jesus knew that life had left her thirsty, just like life has left you thirsty. Decisions you’ve made, decisions other people have made that have affected you — isn’t it true? Your attempts to quench your thirst have not worked. Life has left you thirsty, hasn’t it?
As we move through life, we begin to be aware that there is a thirst in us that goes beyond physical thirst. There is something that needs to be filled, and so we do everything we can to try and fill it — only we often try to fill it with all the wrong things. So, let me ask you: How much sand does it take to quench your thirst?
You and I both know that no amount of sand will ever quench thirst. Sand compounds thirst! No amount of sand — no amount of relationships, no amount of stuff, no amount of dollars, no amount of experiences is ever going to fully satisfy your need, your thirst. Because you were created with a thirst for a relationship with your heavenly Father — and that’s the only thing that can satisfy that need.
So, here’s my question for you: has life left you thirsty? Have you come to the place where you’re willing to admit, “Okay, you’re right, life has left me thirsty, and I’m looking to the Lord Jesus Christ to quench my thirst.”
If you’re willing to admit that, then you’re a candidate for God’s living water, God’s thirst-satisfying grace. Because the testimony of the woman at the well is, “Life has left me thirsty. But Jesus quenched my thirst.”
Trusting in God to satisfy our thirst,
Bruce Jones,
