Happy Advent, Dearest Friends,
The season of Advent began yesterday, on Sunday, November 30, and continues through Christmas Eve, December 24. Advent prepares us for the coming of Christ into the world and prepares our hearts for the gift of Christmas.
Christmas is always so wonderful, yet sometimes so challenging, because Christmas sometimes exaggerates all the dysfunctions which exist within families. However, at the same time, Christmas points us to something that is absolutely incredible, because Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, yet there are people who we can’t control — right? There are problems we can’t solve — right? And there are expectations we can’t meet.
But at Christmas, we celebrate an event that changed everything — when God sent his Son into the world to become the center of history. However, more important for you, and more important for me, God sent His Son into the world to become the center of my life, and the center of your life.
When Jesus becomes the center of your life and mine, it centers our lives on something stable. On something hopeful. On something that gives us a sense of purpose. A sense of, “I don’t need to fear, even though there are many, many things to fear.”
It’s the most wonderful time of year because, at Christmas, we are reminded of who is for us. There is now a light that shines in the darkness, and there is no amount of darkness, and there is no type of darkness that can put it out.
Not at the time of Jesus’ birth. Not today. Not ever.
But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son (Galatians 4:4),
