Good Morning, My Dear Friends,
One of the greatest invitations we find in Scripture is recorded in the gospel of Matthew, chapter 11, in the concluding verses of the chapter. Jesus was speaking to an audience not too much unlike the one to whom I preach each Sunday: a mixed bag of people with all kinds of issues, all kinds of problems and disappointments, overtaxed, overworked, anxious . . . and here’s what he said to them. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28-29).
When we’re young and we start making life decisions, most of our decisions are based on what we sense and what we feel. Very little attention is given to our soul. In other words, I want a career that will make me feel better about myself. I want to have enough money so that I will feel better. I want a relationship that will make me feel something. It’s all about our feelings, and all about success. There is nothing about our souls. I have yet to see a commercial on television that says, “Hey, here’s the secret for being filled in your soul.”
Yet isn’t it true, as we get older, that our souls demand more and more attention? As we get older, we become more and more aware that, if things aren’t right in our soul, then nothing is going to be right anywhere.
It doesn’t matter how old you are, but if you are at the point in life where you begin to realize that your life strategy has nothing for your soul, if there’s nothing that brings you peace and contentment, if you’ve come to the place where you realize life doesn’t really have much meaning, and you’re wise enough to realize that the heart is where it really counts, Jesus says, “Then I’ve got some good news for you. Come to me, get under my yoke, and learn from me, and you will find rest for your soul.”
Only then will you find that you can live your life with hands wide open, knowing that every area of your life is surrendered to God.
Your soul will be at peace when you surrender to Him,
