It will be a historic and far-reaching moment this Sunday afternoon when our architect, Gray Hudson, presents a proposed master site plan to the Leadership Team, detailing the short-term and long-range uses of our 16-acre tract of land for the ministry, mission, service and outreach of Imagine Church. William Burroughs once said that a society without dreams is a dead society. If that’s true, then it’s apparent that Imagine Church is alive and well, judging by the dreams our members expressed during our church-wide sessions in December and January.
There’s a simple poem that speaks to me, written over 50 years ago by William Carruth: “We are all of us dreamers of dreams, on visions our childhood is fed, and the heart of the child is undaunted it seems, by the ghosts of dreams that are dead. From childhood to youth’s but a span, and the years of our life are soon sped; but the youth is no longer a youth but a man, when the last of one’s dreams is dead. He may live on, by compact or plan when the fine bloom of living is shed, but God pity the little that’s left of our life when the last of our dreams is dead.”
People leave jobs, not because their work is completed, but because their dream is dead. Institutions, friendships, marriages, corporations fall apart not “at their seams” but at their dreams. As Jesus’ disciples, we are to join together in re-dreaming the landscape of life — not to “make a difference in life,” but to make life different.
I’m proud of the people of Imagine Church for being willing to fill our souls with God-sized dreams. What are the dreams you have for us? What are the dreams you have for you? You can’t dream too big. My advice and challenge to us is: Dream on! Dream big! Don’t give up! Dream, dream, dream!
