One of the emails that comes across my desk each week is called “Church Leaders” and this week it included an article by Andrew Hess entitled, “100 Remarkable Reasons to Thank God This Thanksgiving.” I think one has to be creative to come up with a list of 100 anything, so I skimmed through the list.
It had the usual things, like “if you were born in a free country, thank God,” and “If you were born to parents who loved you and provided for you, thank God (and thank them).” But there were others, too — ones we don’t often think to include. If someone cared for you when you were sick, thank God. If someone taught you how to ride a bike, thank God. If you can run, walk, jump, and climb, thank God.
How about these? If you’ve never needed an ambulance, thank God. If you’ve never had a broken bone, thank God. If you’ve never had a mental/emotional disorder, thank God. For every automatic bodily process keeping you alive at this very moment, thank God. Estimate the number of days you’ve enjoyed a clean bill of health, thank God. (50 years = 18,250 days)
This Thanksgiving evening, you’ll have about an hour after the Cowboys vs. Redskins and before the Saints vs. Falcons — why not be creative and use that time to compose your own list? If you can read and write, if you enjoy each of the five senses, thank God. Let me see your list next Sunday morning, too. After all, remarkable blessings deserve remarkable thanks.
